Seattle Public Utilities North Transfer Station

Seattle Public Utilities replaced the aging North Transfer Station with a modern, high‑capacity facility, maintaining full operations on a constrained urban site while advancing sustainability goals.
The North Transfer Station replaces Seattle Public Utilities’ original 1967 facility with a new three‑story, 170,000 SF solid waste and recycling center built on the same constrained site. The project expanded capacity and services with a dedicated recycling building, improved self‑haul access, internal vehicle queuing, and an administration space with public viewing and education areas. Built to process up to 750 tons per day in a dense neighborhood near Lake Union, the project required careful phasing to keep operations fully active during construction. The facility earned LEED® Gold certification and an AIA COTE Top Ten Award, reflecting its long‑term focus on sustainability and efficient public service.
