South County Recycling & Transfer Station

King County’s first Living Building Challenge project replaces an active recycling and transfer station while improving critical infrastructure and restoring natural habitat.
The South County Recycling and Transfer Station replaces a busy, high‑use facility while keeping operations running for the City of Algona and King County Solid Waste. The new station features a 36,000 SF commercial tipping floor, an 18‑space public self‑haul drop‑off area, recycling and green waste zones, a baler area, and a dedicated Moderate Risk Waste facility with a covered drive‑through. The project also includes loadout and trailer storage areas, along with major infrastructure upgrades, stream restoration in partnership with the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe, and sustainable features that support King County’s first Living Building Challenge facility.
